It is the first commercial-scale project in Belgrade that will operate efficiently and effectively entirely without fossil fuels. To fulfill the heating (1 MW / 284.3 RT) and cooling (750 kW / 213.3 RT) requirements of this large complex, 70 boreholes were drilled and 7,200 meters / 23,622 feet of geoKOAX probes were installed. The hotel will cover an area of roughly 17,500 square meters and with over 250 suites and rooms, two restaurants, and an inner courtyard that is partially located underground.

Right in the heart of London at King’s Cross, the IOP – Institute of Physics has completed a high – profile project using geoKOAX ground heat exchangers in the retrofit of the building’s HVAC system. The innovative ground loop provides 34 tons of cooling and 21 tons of heating and is a true commitment from the scientific community to combat climate change through the use of sustainable and renewable technologies.

The high energy requirements of the hospital and drilling restrictions of 31 meters / 101 feet meant that geothermal heat was initially considered only as a supplementary source. However, the high energy volume of the geoKOAX heat exchanger made it possible to cover energy requirements for heating and cooling entirely from geothermal energy.

In North America, the first installation of a geoKOAX probe was installed in Pennsylvania for a residential application. The system was designed to heat and cool the house and provide 100 percent of hot water – a safe and comfortable alternative to burning propane gas or other fossil fuels. Two 250-ft boreholes 35-ft apart were installed in series coupled with a Climate Master Trilogy heat pump. Pairing the geoKOAX probes with a variable speed heat pump provides an impressive coefficient of performance of 5.5 and a significant reduction of electric consumption compared to conventional heating or cooling systems.

After repeatedly reaching artesian aquifiers during drilling, the water authority ordered that the drilling depth should be limited to 24 meters / 78 feet. These new depth restrictions posed a threat to the viability of the project because the site was not large enough to compensate by drilling several boreholes instead. Only by using efficient geoKOAX heat exchangers was it possible to complete the project successfully.

As there were no restrictions on drilling depths, it was decided to drill down to 80 meters / 262 feet without connecting aquifers. Despite limited space on the site, the high efficiency of the geoKOAX heat exchanger made it possible to cover the entire energy requirements (heating and cooling) of the residence through geothermal energy and to avoid the use of fossil fuels.

We were able to negotiate a package with an overall price for this project for the first time. The key factor was the low drilling risk, as only two boreholes with a depth of 35 meters / 114 feet were required for each house to cover the energy requirements with geoKOAX heat exchangers. The home owners have recouped their investment after just four years. The result: energy costs, which are 65 % lower and a higher property value.

A comprehensive renovation of the energy supply to this apartment block dating from the 1960's was undertaken. In addition, the apartment owners decided to replace the old oil-fired heating with a geothermal system. This systems now supplies the entire block with free geothermal heat. The restriction of drilling depth was 39 meters / 127 feet.

Drilling restrictions of 21 meters / 68 feet and the limited size of the plot-area meant that a change to geothermal energy was possible only by using the efficient geoKOAX heat exchanger. The system not only provides free heat from a renewable source but also passive cooling in the summer. Apart from benefiting from a short payback period on the investment, the owners are now independent of fluctuating and rising prices for fossil fuels and are pleased with the increase in the value of their property.

The points system of the German Federal Railways must be kept free of ice during the winter, and in an environmentally friendly manner. The extreme geological conditions around Farchant presented a particular challenge: the heat exchangers are located in glacier water with a temperature of 2 °C / 36 °F. The system has been working without fault since it was commissioned.

A water system was planned at first, but this had to be abandoned due to inadequate yields. However, the boreholes could then be used for geoKOAX heat exchangers. A combined geothermal heating and cooling system replaced the previous system.

The building belongs to a specialist technical planning bureau. The engineering company made a conscious decision in favor of geoKOAX, after the heat exchanger had been used successfully in previous projects. Despite a drilling depth restriction of 30 meters / 98 feet, it was necessary to drill just four boreholes of 28 meters / 91 feet each to cover energy requirements.

The original construction plan involved the use of conventional heat exchanger systems. In the course of the first drilling an interface was encountered which could not be drilled through. After this, the water authorities imposed a drilling restriction with a low maximum drilling depth. Furthermore, the site was too small and so a return to use of fossil fuels seemed inevitable. However, the use of a geoKOAX heat exchanger meant that the geothermal project could be completed successfully and at lower cost, despite the drilling depth restriction.

The project was supported financially by the energy agency of the federal state of North-Rhine Westphalia, but subject to adherence to stringent guidelines. An unusual feature were the boreholes underneath the building. The project was even awarded a prize as being a "climate protection estate" ("Klimaschutzsiedlung") due to the leading-edge technology of the geoKOAX heat exchanger.

After a completed planning process and installation of the heat pump, the geothermal plant, which was planned by another company, was threatened with failure because the local authorities imposed a drilling depth restriction of 25 meters / 82 feet after the initial drilling. However, the site was too small to cover the required energy with conventional heat exchangers. Using more efficient geoKOAX heat exchangers, it was possible to implement this geothermal project as a combined heating and cooling system.

Despite official limitations on drilling depths to 26 meters /85 feet, geothermal energy became a possibility for the first time on this island through the use of geoKOAX heat exchangers. This means that the regular transport of fossil fuels across the lake is no longer necessary, avoiding the resulting pollution and especially the risk to the lake's drinking water.
